LG To Showcase 84-Inch 3D TV With 4K Resolution At CES 2012

LG_84INCH_UDTV01_500It seems that 55-Inch OLED TV wasn't enough for LG: the Korean company today announced it's ready to showcase another monster TV at the CES 2012 in Las Vegas (which kicks off on January 10). This model comes with a 84-inch 3D LCD display with 4K resolution (3,840?2,160 pixels). To put things into perspective: 4K resolution, which LG calls "Ultra Definition", is four times the resolution of full HD. Other details are scarce at this point, but LG promises "slim and narrow bezel design", controllable 3D picture effects, and 3D sound zooming capability.

About 500 people were evacuated from the Moscow State University early Friday after a fire broke out in the building, officials said.

A law enforcement officer said a Chinese woman was hospitalized after being diagnosed as 'poisoned with combustion products'.

Earlier Yevgeny Bobylyov, a spokesman for the emergencies ministry's Moscow department, said no one was injured.

A room on the 18th floor was on fire. The flame has been extinguished, Bobylyov said.

Chavez questions if US gave leaders cancer

CARACAS?-?

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez speculated on Wednesday that the United States might have developed a way to give Latin American leaders cancer, after Argentina?s Cristina Fernandez joined the list of presidents diagnosed with the disease.

It was a typically controversial statement by Venezuela?s socialist leader, who underwent surgery in June to remove a tumor from his pelvis. But he stressed that he was not making any accusations, just thinking aloud.

?It would not be strange if they had developed the technology to induce cancer and nobody knew about it until now ... I don?t know. I?m just reflecting,? he said in a televised speech to troops at a military base.

?But this is very, very, very strange ... it?s a bit difficult to explain this, to reason it, including using the law of probabilities.?

Chavez, Fernandez, Paraguay?s Fernando Lugo, Brazil?s Dilma Rousseff and former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have all been diagnosed recently with cancer. All of them are leftists.

Doctors say Fernandez has a very good chance of recovery and will not need chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Her diagnosis was made public on Tuesday.

Chavez said other regional leaders should beware, including his close ally, Bolivian President Evo Morales.

?We?ll have to take good care of Evo. Take care Evo!? he said.

The 57-year-old is Latin America?s loudest critic of U.S. foreign policy along with Cuba?s former leader Fidel Castro, and he frequently lashes out at what he calls the ?Yankee Empire?.

CASTRO?S WARNING

?Fidel always told me, ?Chavez take care. These people have developed technology. You are very careless. Take care what you eat, what they give you to eat ... a little needle and they inject you with I don?t know what,?? he said.

In his comments on Wednesday, Chavez also slammed Washington and its European allies for criticizing Russia?s recent parliamentary elections - and said they were planning the same thing for Venezuela?s presidential election in October, when he will seek re-election.

?They are crying fraud and saying the elections need to be re-run ... They?re trying to destabilize no less than Russia, a nuclear power. That?s the madness of the Empire,? Chavez said.

?I say this because here in Venezuela, the Imperial Yankee, the local bourgeoisie, and a good part of what they call the opposition parties here, are preparing a similar plan,? he said.

?I call on the armed forces to be alert, on the Venezuelan people to be alert. Because we are not going to let the Imperial Yankee destabilize Venezuela again like they did in the past.?

Details about Chavez?s health remain a closely guarded secret, although he now appears to be recovering and is making longer and longer televised appearances.

Earlier this month he made his first official foreign trip after his surgery, to a regional summit in Uruguay.

Since his return he has often appeared sporting something of a younger, new look: a dark sports coat over an open-necked maroon shirt, and is hair is growing back after chemotherapy.

It is far cry from the green fatigues and red beret that he became famous for wearing for much of his 13 years in power.

One held as Indian's killing sparks outrage on Facebook

One held as Indian's killing sparks outrage on Facebook
Albuquerque Express

A 17-year-old British youth has been arrested over the fatal shooting of Indian student Anuj Bidve in Manchester, triggering condemnation on social networking website Facebook.

Bidve, 23, was part of a group of nine men and women -- all Indian students -- visiting the city for a short break for Christmas. He was a postgraduate student in micro-electronics at Lancaster University.

The arrested youth was being questioned, said BBC.

Hailing from Pune in India's Maharashtra state, Bidve was shot in the head while walking from his hotel in Salford area towards the Manchester city centre around 1.30 a.m. He died at a hospital a short while later.

Two men walked up to Bidve and his friends outside an eatery. After a short exchange of words, one man pulled out a pistol and shot the Indian student in the side of the head at point-blank range. The two fled, leaving Bidve dying in the street in a pool of blood.

Manchester police chief superintendent Kevin Mulligan said it was an 'awful, unprovoked attack on a young student'.

Witnesses said the attack was not a robbery or racially motivated.

The gunman was a white man in his mid 20s, of slim build and wearing a grey top. The other man had a heavier build and wore a black jacket.

Bidve's friends were being looked after in a 'safe place' by police.

Shocked neighbours told the Manchester Evening News they no longer felt safe in their own homes.

Donna Wilson, a 30-year-old mother of two young children, said: 'We were in bed when it happened and I woke up and saw the forensics people outside. It's right there, practically on my own doorstep. You don't feel safe in your own home.'

'I was up at six o'clock and saw all the police out of the window. I felt sick when I heard what happened. It's disgusting,' Kerry Thompson, who has lived there for 11 years, was quoted as saying.

A university spokeswoman said counselling and support was being organised for the friends who were described as 'deeply upset', reported Sky News.

Bidve's father Subhash turned to Facebook to seek assistance: 'Pl help in getting Anuj's dead body back to India.'

The social networking website has been flooded with comments condemning the killing.

Rakesh Sonawane, a resident of Pune, who now stays in Manchester, described on Facebook what he saw at the spot.

'In the early hours of the morning - I arrived at a scene i will never forget. Anuj Bidve had been shot in the head - for no reason what so ever. I feel like i myself did not do enough to help Anuj this morning - i feel that neither did the police and ambulance crews.'

He added: 'I personally feel disgusted that someone from our town could do such a thing to a visitor of our city.'

Sunit Parab from Glasgow said it was 'really a sad incident to have happened'.

Yas Miin, another Facebook user, termed the killers 'sick scumbags' and sought their hanging.

Manchester residents Becca Cloughley Lewtas said she was 'ashamed that someone from my city would do such a vile act'.

'I truly hope they catch the vermin who did this to you,' she wrote further.

Shripad Sathe, however, opposed taking the body back to India.

'Whilst I did not know this gentleman before, might I also, with due respect to everyone, also suggest last respects might be paid in the UK, rather than carry him (all with paperwork etc which is mentally traumatic) to India? Sincere apologies if this hurts anyone,' Sathe wrote on the website.

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital Inboxes [Mail]

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesIt's fun getting email and snail mail when you receive something you actually want, but that joy is easily overshadowed by the massive amount of mail you don't really care to read. While SPAM filters do a great job of killing your supply of junk mail, your physical and digital inboxes are likely filled with newsletters and advertisements you could easily do without. Here's how you can clear out all that crap.

The Physical Inbox

Your physical inbox is frequently stuffed with catalogs, advertisements, coupon sheets, and mail for previous residents on a regular basis, and it sucks. While the United States Postal Service (which may go out of business in the next decade) could easily solve their money troubles (and save a lot of paper) by instituting fines for unsolicited junk mail, they probably won't and so you're stuck with a bunch of crap you don't need or want. Fortunately there are a few ways to help clean out the crap so you only get the mail you want.

Employ a Mail Blocking Service

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesIf you're willing to pay a small fee (generally $20-30) to clean out your physical mailbox, services like Greendimes, 41 Pounds, and Stop the Junk Mail can take care of the problem for you. All you do is provide a information about you and your problem address and the services will make the necessary calls to get you off of junk and grey mail lists. While they won't be able to stop 100% of the unwanted mail you receive, the reduction rates are usually between 85 and 90%. That's a big difference.

Switch to Electronic Billing and Banking Statements

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesMost companies don't want to pay the cost of sending you mail when they can just give you a bill online. It's cheaper for them, and it's less hassle for you. Everybody wins in this situation, so it's likely that any bills or statements you receive can be stopped by opting in to an electronic format. Every time you receive one of these bills just go to the company's web site and look for an option to get an electronic statement. Sometimes the URL you need will be on the bill itself. If you receive a handful of bills and statements that don't have an electronic option, you can use a service like Earth Class Mail to have electronic, downloadable versions created for you automatically.

Strike Out Mail to Former Residents

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesIf you're not the first person to ever live in your home, you're probably receiving some mail from previous residents who forgot to forward their mail or just never notified some of the junk senders of their move. According to a thread on Metafilter, most people were told by the US Postal Service to indicate that this person has moved and leave the mail for their carrier the next day. User jmd82 provides the most specific explanation:

At my previous apartment, I asked the post office what to do and they said strike out the person's name and write "moved" while leaving it in the mailbox for the postman. I think they ask for the striking out of the name to make it obvious that it's the wrong address, whereas writing on mail alone might be glanced over.

While doing this is certainly no guarantee, as the US Postal Service has a lot of mail to handle and things are going to slip through, if you're persistent you should be able to at least reduce the delivery of mail that doesn't belong to you.

The Digital Inbox

The digital inbox can often feel more cluttered by unwanted mail than the physical because, in a list of messages, all mail looks about the same. Inbox clutter has long been a problem online, of course, so there are plenty of tools to help you out. Some are likely built into your email service or app already, and others are available elsewhere online.

Get Rid of Newsletters and Ads You Don't Want

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesSometimes you sign up for newsletters unintentionally and you find yourself stuck with a bunch of mail you don't want to read. You can get rid of it quickly by doing a quick search for the word "unsubscribe" and creating a filter that automatically deletes emails with that word in it. Of course, that system is imperfect because it's possible that it will catch a message that's not a newsletter. (Not very likely, but possible.) Alternatively, you can use a service like Unroll.me that's designed to find all the newsletters in your inbox and help you easily unsubscribe without hassle. (Note: This service only works with popular online email providers, not any IMAP inbox.)

Create a Whitelist Filter

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesIf your email service or app provides filtering options, you should consider creating a whitelist that sorts your email by priority. Even with features like Gmail's Priority Inbox, you're always going to be the best judge of what's important and what isn't. All you need to do is create a filter that is designed to ignore important messages and leave them in the inbox, but move everything else into a secondary folder (or label, if you're a Gmail user). This way only email senders you've designated as important will show up in your inbox and you can check the secondary folder when you have a bit more time. Whitelists have the disadvantage of being too strict, but since you'll be checking both your primary and now secondary inbox you won't have to worry too much about that. The filter isn't set in stone, either, so you'll be able to update it as needed until it's working great for you.

Baby babble or the b-word? Toys 'R' Us doll receives complaints

By msnbc.com and NBC News

?

They play. They giggle. But, then, say some angry consumers, the You and Me Play and Giggle Triplet dolls say "OK, crazy b****."

The adorable-looking dolls, clad in their pajamas with matching nightcaps, make babbling sounds and move their heads and are made exclusively for the Toys "R" Us brand, reported NBCPhiladelphia.com on Monday. The store defended the product and said what customers claim they are hearing is a misunderstanding.

"Obviously we would not sell a doll that uses profanity. What you?re hearing is just baby babble...There are no plans to pull it off the shelves," Toys ?R? Us spokeswoman Jennifer Albano told the NBC Philadelphia's Lu Ann Cahn.

Read the full story on NBCPhiladelphia.com

But others disagreed. An Oaklyn, N.J., grandmother, Pauline Davis, had bought the Giggle Triplets as a last-minute gift on Christmas Eve and was appalled when she got home to test out the dolls before giving them to her grandchildren, the website reported.

?I'm stunned ... There?s no mistake about it. The baby does use the B-word that ends in H,? Davis said.

Davis called up the Cherry Hill, N.J. store where she bought the dolls. The store apologized to her, Davis told NBC Philadelphia.

"They were appalled," Davis said. "But it still doesn't change things. Who released this doll?"

NBC Philadelphia went to the Cherry Hill Toys "R" Us to test out the dolls and found them on sale, all saying the same thing. Toys "R" maintained the toy wasn't using profanity, and said they had no plans to take it off shelves.

How Does NORAD 'Track' Santa? (LiveScience.com)

For more than 50 years, NORAD ? the North American Aerospace Defense Command ? has used its high-tech missile-tracking systems to track Santa's progress during his annual Christmas Eve flight around the world.

For a 24-hour period, about 1,200 military volunteers take shifts manning the command center at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado; they monitor radar screens and field calls from excited 7-year-olds who ask for updates on Santa's location. They also update Kris Kringle's progress on the Google Earth map on the NORAD Tracks Santa website, as well as the Facebook page and the Twitter feed.

For the first time this year, people can even keep constant tabs on Santa's sleigh by downloading the NORAD Tracks Santa iPhone and Android apps. In other words, the program is a big deal, and it get bigger every Christmas.

But how do they do it? How does NORAD "track" Santa? [Is There a Santa Claus?]

When asked whether the volunteers plan the jolly old elf's route ahead of time, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Bill Lewis, a Santa tracker, was having none of that.

"We don't plan it, he does," Lewis said. "We just monitor his travels with our ground-based radar, satellites, fighter aircraft, and, of course, the Santa Cams ? he passes over certain cities, and based on the track we're projecting, we've got cameras set up."

The NORAD team monitors a radar system called the North Warning System, which consists of 47 installations strung across the northern border of North America, for indications that Santa Claus has left the North Pole.

"Rudolph's nose puts off quite the heat signature," Lewis told Life's Little Mysteries.

The Christmas program isn't so out of the ordinary for the men and women of NORAD: "365 days a year we track possible threats to the homeland. So tracking Santa as an airborne object fits into our mission set," he said.

Through his experience as a Santa Tracker, Lewis was able to offer a bit of insight into an age-old question: How Santa manages to make it all the way around the world, sort through all the gifts for the good boys and girls and get home before dawn. "Santa has this way of transcending time. We've estimated that he travels at the speed of starlight," Lewis said. [Can Tech Help Santa Deliver the Goods? 5 Tech Upgrades for Claus ]

That's 671 million miles (1 billion kilometers) per hour, which means Santa can travel more than 16 billion miles (26 billion km) in the 24 hours allotted for his journey. A trip round the world is only 25,000 miles (40,000 kilometers), so at his estimated flight speed, Santa could technically circumnavigate Earth 650,000 times if he wanted.

He doesn't, of course ? instead, he takes it slow and downs a mindblowing number of cookies and glasses of milk along the way.

Fritz Strobl, M.D.: 10 Ways to Combat Holiday Stress

Some of the problem can be attributed to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), not simply stress. It's the time of year when we may leave for work when it's dark and come home after the sun goes down. Bright, full-spectrum light for 30 minutes in the morning may help. (As pretty as they are, nighttime Christmas lights don't count!) Walking outside is great not only for the sunlight but also for the exercise. Even if it's chilly, bundle up and get outside during the day -- build a snowman, head down the road to visit a friend in the neighborhood or walk to the store rather than drive.

College Hockey Realignment: UConn To Evaluate Men's Ice Hockey Program

In a cryptic release on uconnhuskies.com, UConn Athletics announced on Tuesday that the department had hired Stafford Sports, LLC, a sports consulting firm, to conduct an evaluation of its men's ice hockey program.

"The purpose of the evaluation is to assess the program's current level of support to that of Atlantic Hockey league members and other programs in the region. The assessment will include financial support, staffing, facilities and potential revenue sources."

This announcement could lead to one of several outcomes. UConn could be evaluating whether to start offering scholarships to become more competitive in Atlantic Hockey (the program currently doesn't offer any). It could also be a sign that the school is serious about becoming the 12th member of Hockey East on the men's side (the Huskies' women's team currently competes in Hockey East). Or it could lead to something far more ominous, like UConn dropping a costly varsity sport it remains largely non-competitive in.

UConn has been a Division I program since 1998. The Huskies spent five seasons in the MAAC before joining Atlantic Hockey. The program has finished with a winning record just twice in 12 seasons at the D-I level -- in 1998-99 and 1999-00.

USCHO's calls to UConn have gone unanswered, so your guess is as good as mine as to what comes of this announcement. But this is something to keep an eye on.

If UConn decides to drop D-I hockey, it wouldn't be the first time a similar fate befalls an Atlantic Hockey / MAAC school. Both Iona and Fairfield dropped varsity men's hockey in 2003, which led to the MAAC dropping its affiliation with the conference.

If the Huskies men's program decides to start offering scholarships, this could be a move to become more competitive in Atlantic Hockey. Or it could be the school positioning itself to join Notre Dame as the 11th and 12th men's programs in Hockey East. Other schools rumored to be in the mix as HEA's 12th program include Holy Cross and RPI.

So what makes chili peppers hot?

Biting into a hot chili may leave you grabbing for a glass of water, but that same spiciness leaves the pepper parched when water runs short, new research suggests.

Researchers have found that the spiciest peppers have the most trouble where water is scarce: They make fewer seeds and therefore leave fewer offspring, giving non-spicy chilies a distinct advantage in dry climates.

"There is a trade-off. The pungent plants aren't allowed to use their water resource as well as non-pungent plants," said study researcher David Haak of Indiana University. They do have the advantage in wetter climates, though: Non-spicy chilies are less able to fight off fungi.

Haak and other researchers grew wild chilies in a lab to study the effects of different environmental conditions, following up on five sampling trips they made to Bolivia from 2002 through 2009, where they studied the spiciness of chilies in different climates.

Spicy peppers
In 2008 the researchers discovered that the pungency of wild peppers ? determined by their amount of spicy chemicals called capsaicinoids ? varies by where they are growing. The population of peppers they studied came from varying climates of southeastern Bolivia, from those with little water to areas where water is plenty. They found the spice-less peppers were more abundant in areas with little water.

There are threats toward the plants in each area: In the wet areas they have to fight off more fungi, which grow better in the moisture, while in dry areas they have to fight to keep the moisture they need to live. The capsaicinoids work in the chili as anti-fungal compounds ; they kill the fungi that normally would live on peppers and keep rats from eating the fruits.

In the wetter region in the southwest, "we noticed that there was an increase in this fungal pathogen and this increase in pungent plants in this population, and those plants were also getting hotter," Haak told LiveScience. "Why do not-hot chilies still exist, if being hot is advantageous against this fungal pathogen?"

Holey plants
So the researchers studied wild plants in the lab, both spicy and not, and deprived them of water during their fruiting cycle (which normally happens during the drier seasons). The researchers found that when it's dry out, production of these chemicals can be costly to the plants: The pungent plants end up producing 50 percent fewer seeds if they are water-starved, while the non-hot plants were unaffected.

The researchers then looked at the plant's stomata ? the pores that let water and air in and out of the plant cells. They saw that the pungent plants had lots more of these little holes (40 percent greater density) than the non-pungent plants did. This could account for their water loss.

Like tomatoes and other relatives, chili peppers aren't very good at regulating how these pores open and close, so if they have more of them, they lose more water, Haak said.

The proteins involved in both spiciness and in building stomata are probably regulated by the same pathway, and genetic changes to this pathway could be the reason why some plants are spicier and have more stomata (and therefore don't deal with drought as well).

The study was published Wednesday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.

Vanessa Bryant to Receive at Least $75 Million in Divorce From Kobe

Vanessa Bryant is positioned to make out like a bandit in her divorce from Kobe Bryant, in large part due to the couple's apparent lack of a prenuptial agreement.

Coupled with 10 years of marriage, her settlement should be upwards of $75 million - half the L.A. Lakers guard's fortune - along with support for their daughters.

Vanessa Bryant's mom told the Los Angeles Times that the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement when they wed - entitling Vanessa to half of their assets.

Vanessa and Kobe Bryant

Estimates put Kobe Bryant's net worth at $150 million. The NBA's highest-paid player, he earned $24.8 million last season, part of an extension worth $83.5 million.

Forbes magazine estimates that with endorsement deals, Kobe last year earned $53 million before taxes and agent fees. So basically, Vanessa is sitting pretty.

The fact the marriage lasted 10 years also gives Vanessa big advantages under California law, as she is allowed to maintain her standard of living after the split.

In the petition filed Friday, Vanessa cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the divorce. The couple says the terms have already been settled privately.

The NBA star was caught cheating with multiple women by his wife, according to sources, with good old-fashioned gossip among basketball spouses to blame.

His latest mistress is rumored to be Jessica Burciaga, but that has not been confirmed.

The lesson in all of this? Get a prenup and/or don't cheat on your wife all the time.

U.S. leaps ahead, Europe debt woes touch Asia (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? U.S. jobless claims on Thursday fell to a 3-1/2-year low and a survey showed New York factories picked up speed this month, bucking gloomy economic trends set by Europe and Asia.

Stock index futures added to gains after the Labor Department revealed initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped by 19,000 to 366,000 last week, the lowest level since May 2008.

And a business survey of New York factories provided more evidence that the U.S. economy is weathering the festering sovereign debt crisis in Europe, which is starting to crimp growth in emerging trade partners like China.

While the pace of decline in the euro zone's business economy unexpectedly slowed in December, surveys earlier on Thursday confirmed the region is almost certainly stuck in recession.

That leaves the United States as perhaps the only major Western power currently making a significant contribution to global economic growth.

"The data is all very in line with a modestly improving overall economy here in the United States," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in New Jersey.

"Stability in the U.S. economy is going to be a vital part of stabilizing global GDP. This comes at a very good time."

The New York Federal Reserve's "Empire State" general business conditions index rose to 9.53 from 0.61 the previous month. Economists polled by Reuters had expected a reading of 3.00.

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve's business activity indicator, another early gauge of private sector activity, is due at 1500 GMT and economists also expect it to rise sharply.

In the euro zone, Markit's flash composite purchasing managers' index (PMI), which corresponds closely with economic growth, rose unexpectedly in December to 47.9 from 47.0 last month.

But it has now lingered below the 50 line that divides growth from contraction for four months.

"(It) reinforces the notion that the euro zone economy is slipping into a mild recession rather than falling off a cliff," said Martin van Vliet, senior economist at ING.

The survey compilers warned against viewing its latest gauge of euro zone business as a turning point, especially since there is still a strong risk the euro zone sovereign debt crisis could spiral out of control.

RESOLUTION NEEDED

EU leaders last week took a historic step towards fiscal union last week, but pressure is building on reluctant euro zone paymaster Germany to take immediate, radical steps to solve the crisis.

A resolution to the crisis is all the more important as its repercussions spread through global economy. China saw its first year-on-year drop in foreign direct investment in 28 months in November.

The HSBC flash manufacturing purchasing managers' index, the earliest indicator of China's industrial activity, rose modestly to 49.0 in December from 47.7 but pointing to a monthly contraction in activity nonetheless.

Most economists gave a cautious welcome to the euro zone PMI data, which measures changes in the activities of thousands of businesses across the euro zone.

"All in all, despite the further pick-up in December, the PMI data still suggest that euro zone real GDP saw a marked contraction in the fourth quarter," said ING's van Vliet.

The Markit Eurozone Composite PMI, which looks at both the manufacturing and services sectors,

Furthermore, only France and Germany were responsible for the upturn in the index, while the euro zone's peripheral economies continued to struggle.

Markit said its data pointed to a quarterly economic decline of 0.6 percent in the euro zone in the final quarter of this year.

That would be twice as deep as the contraction expected by economists in a Reuters poll on Wednesday, which also forecast a 0.2 percent fall in the first three months of the new year.

An escalation of the debt crisis could cause a far steeper contraction next year -- a scenario the Swiss National Bank warned on Thursday could not be ruled out, after holding its exchange rate cap on the franc against the euro for now.

There was one bright note on Thursday. The risk premium on benchmark Spanish bonds fell following a well-received bond auction that raised more than the government had targeted.

Pa. deputy attorney general cites PSU 'inaction' (AP)

HARRISBURG, Pa. ? A graduate student waited a day after allegedly seeing a child being sexually assaulted on Penn State's campus before telling his supervisor, football coach Joe Paterno.

Paterno waited another day before calling the university's athletic director, who looped in a school vice president.

"It was a Saturday morning and I didn't want to interfere with their weekends," Paterno told a grand jury this year, recalling the unusual visit from graduate assistant Mike McQueary.

McQueary said he had seen former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky doing something "extremely sexual" with a young boy in a locker room shower.

On Friday, McQueary testified at a preliminary hearing for two Penn State officials ? athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz ? accused of covering up the story. He offered the most detailed public account yet of the child sex abuse allegations that have upended the university's football program and the entire central Pennsylvania campus.

Curley and Schultz are headed to trial on perjury charges after Friday's preliminary hearing, accused of lying to a grand jury about what McQueary told them.

Curly and Schultz waited another 10 days before meeting with McQueary to get more facts. Instead of calling police, they talked to two people: Sandusky and the executive director of his children's charity.

"I think it's a sad, sad, sad day, when you think about all of these victims, and you saw the inaction by a number of supposedly important, responsible adults. And there's a lot of inaction in this case," Marc Costanzo, a senior deputy attorney general, said after the preliminary hearing.

Besides the perjury charges, and the dozens of sex assault charges pending against Sandusky, Paterno and university president Graham Spanier have lost their jobs over the scandal.

Defense lawyers argued that McQueary "minimized" the alleged sexual assault when he talked to Paterno, ultimately leading their clients to believe that Sandusky's behavior was "inappropriate," but not criminal.

They say McQueary never relayed the seriousness of what he saw, leading them to think Sandusky was merely "horsing around."

"I didn't see any reason because I didn't think at the time it was a crime," Curley told the grand jury, according to testimony read into the record on Friday.

Curley, Schultz and Paterno have been criticized for not telling law enforcement about the 2002 charges. Prosecutors say Sandusky continued to abuse boys for six more years.

In about two hours on the witness stand, McQueary said again and again that what he saw was a sexual act, although he stopped short of saying he was sure that Sandusky, now 67, had raped the boy.

"I believe Jerry was sexually molesting him and having some type of sexual intercourse with him," McQueary said on Friday. He said later he "can't say 100 percent" that Sandusky and the boy were having intercourse because he was seeing Sandusky from behind.

He said after talking to his father, he went over to Paterno's home the next morning and said that what he had seen "was way over the lines, it was extremely sexual in nature." He said he would not have used words like sodomy or intercourse with Paterno, out of respect for the coach.

Paterno told the grand jury that McQueary said he saw Sandusky doing something of a "sexual nature" with the youngster but that he didn't press for details.

"I didn't push Mike ... because he was very upset," Paterno said. "I knew Mike was upset, and I knew some kind of inappropriate action was being taken by Jerry Sandusky with a youngster."

Paterno told McQueary he would talk to others about what he'd reported.

McQueary said he met about 10 days later with Curley and Schultz and told them he'd seen Sandusky and a boy, both naked, in the shower after hearing skin-on-skin slapping sounds.

"I would have described that it was extremely sexual and I thought that some kind of intercourse was going on," said McQueary.

McQueary said he was left with the impression both men took his report seriously. When asked why he didn't go to police, he referenced Schultz's position as a vice president at the university who had overseen the campus police

"I thought I was talking to the head of the police, to be frank with you," he said. "In my mind it was like speaking to a (district attorney). It was someone who police reported to and would know what to do with it."

The square-jawed, red-haired assistant coach spoke in a steady voice in his first public account of the alleged abuse, sometimes turning his seat and leaning in toward defense lawyers to answer questions. His voice rose a few times and he blushed once when describing the sexual encounter in the shower.

Defense lawyers for Curley and Schultz argued that a perjury charge in Pennsylvania cannot be based solely on one person's oath versus another's. The defense said uncorroborated testimony from McQueary is not enough, and sought to pick apart the ways he described the shower scene differently to different people.

The defense noted that McQueary admitted changing his description of the shower encounter when speaking with Paterno.

McQueary said he had stopped by a campus football locker room to drop off a pair of sneakers the Friday night before spring break, a quiet night on campus, when he saw Sandusky with a boy who looked to be 10 or 12 years old.

McQueary, 37, said he has never described what he saw as anal rape or anal intercourse and couldn't see Sandusky's genitals, but that "it was very clear that it looked like there was intercourse going on."

In its report last month, the grand jury summarized McQueary's testimony as saying he "saw a naked boy ... with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky."

McQueary said he peeked into the shower three times ? the first via a mirror, the other two times directly. The last time he looked in, Sandusky and the boy had separated, he said. He said he didn't say anything, but "I know they saw me. They looked directly in my eye, both of them."

McQueary said the entire encounter ? from when he first entered the locker room to when he retreated to his office ? lasted about 45 seconds.

Curley told the grand jury that he couldn't recall his specific conversation with McQueary, but said McQueary never reported seeing anal intercourse or other sexual conduct. He said he spoke to Sandusky about it, who first denied having been in the shower with a boy, but later changed his story.

Schultz said he remembered McQueary and Paterno describing what the younger coach saw only in a very general way.

"I had the impression it was inappropriate," Schultz told the grand jury. "I had the feeling it was some king of wrestling activity and maybe Jerry might have grabbed a young boy's genitals."

Under cross-examination, McQueary said he considered what he saw a crime but didn't call police because "it was delicate in nature."

"I tried to use my best judgment," he said. "I was sure the act was over." He said he never tried to find the boy.

Paterno, Schultz and Curley didn't testify, but their entire grand jury testimony from January was read at the Dauphin County hearing.

Curley's attorney, Caroline Roberto, said prosecutors "will never be able to reach their burden of proof at a trial," in part because McQueary "minimized" the alleged assault to Paterno.

Schultz's attorney, Tom Farrell, predicted his client would be acquitted.

He also took a shot at Paterno, saying, "I'm an Italian from Brooklyn, and he may not have called the police but he may have done what I would have done, which is get the boys in the car with a few baseball bats and crowbars and take it to the fellow."

Sandusky says he is innocent of 52 criminal charges stemming from what authorities say were sexual assaults over 12 years on 10 boys in his home, on Penn State property and elsewhere.

Curley, 57, was placed on leave by the university after his arrest. Schultz, 62, returned to retirement after spending about four decades at the school, most recently as senior vice president for business and finance, and treasurer.

Video: McCain: ?We risk losing peace? in Iraq

>> john mccain is the ranking member of the senate armed services committee . senator, it's nice to see you. good morning.

>> thank you, matt.

>> you watched this ceremony i'm sure or parts of it this morning in baghdad. what are your reflections?

>> well, my reflections are that it was a noble cause and obviously i believe that saddam hussein was going to attempt at least to get weapons of mass destruction . i believe the iraqi people are better off. i believe serious mistakes were made which prolonged this war, which i think people -- history will hold responsible. i think the surge obviously turned the whole situation around. it's too bad that we didn't employ that strategy earlier. but i'm also very concerned because in the words of general keene, one of the architects of the surge, we won the war and now we risk losing the peace because we do not have a residual force to leave behind and there are serious challenges and difficulties the iraqi government will face in the form of their air space , in the form of the kurdish/iraqi areas and including counterintelligence capabilities. i really think we risk losing -- great risk at losing everything we gained and that is the opinion of every military leader that i've talked to.

>> so was this purely in your opinion an idea of meeting a campaign promise ? is this simply not the right time to conduct this pullout?

>> well, i think the pullout was correct, but condoleezza rice , former secretary of state, as you know, stated that we had always envisioned a residual force being left behind . the president made a promise, a campaign promise that he would bring all the troops out. it's very obvious. i know for a fact because i was involved that there was very little real discussion with the iraqis about a residual force being left behind and it is what it is. so we risk losing everything that we gained at enormous sacrifice.

>> td "new york times" talked to some iraqis about this pullout and a government employee said, quote, i am so concerned about the u.s. withdrawal. many things will gradually deteriorate in iraq especially security, which will be affected by iran's influence once the americans have gone. do you fear we're leaving behind a void that the iranians will gladly fill?

>> i think they already are filling it. there's no doubt that sadr is a client of the iranians. he's part of the iraqi government . there's tension on the kurdish/iraqi border over a lot of things, and there is, of course, not the kind of counterintelligence that is necessary with u.s. assistance. so as i say, we risk losing everything that we gain. i think it's a great risk and i think it was unnecessary. we always envisioned some residual force, and this administration -- they were never really serious at all. we risk seeing iraq break up into three countries, which is what the vice president envisioned. remember that the president and the vice president all oppose the surge, said we couldn't win, and they wanted to withdraw and they have succeeded.

>> let me ask you about our image around the world following this war. former vice president dick cheney was here on the show not long ago. he said he doesn't believe there's been damage to the u.s. reputation as a result of this war. do you think there has been damage? do you disagree with vice president cheney ?

>> i travel extensively in that part of the world. every leader i meet with believes that the united states is withdrawing, that our influence in the region is clearly on the wane, and i think that this has an effect on the taliban in afghanistan. recently a former administration official was meeting with the president of pakistan . he said, do you think they'll make peace, the taliban? he said, why should they? they know you're leaving.

Relationships discovered in data will shed light on vexing problems and increase human understanding

With support from the National Science Foundation, researchers from the Broad Institute and Harvard University recently developed a tool that can uncover patterns in large data sets in a way that no other software program can.

Called Maximal Information Coefficient or MIC, the tool can can tease out multiple, recurring events or sets of data hidden in health information from around the globe, or in the changing bacterial landscape of the gut or even in statistics amassed from a season of competitive sports--and much more. The researchers report their findings in the Dec. 16th issue of the journal Science.

Part of a suite of statistical tools called MINE for Maximal Information-based Nonparametric Exploration, MIC has the ability to sort through today's mass of research variables--from attempts to track hurricanes, efforts to model earthquakes, endeavors to identify the Higgs Boson and efforts to glean insights from affecting the world economy and social networking interaction.

Researchers currently use advanced technology to gather big, complex, data sets, which may be incredibly useful in enhancing system understanding, if, in fact, vast amounts of data can be organized so that telling information may be extracted. Sophisticated computer programs research these data sets with great speed, but fall short in even-handedly detecting different kinds of patterns in large data collections, essential for more sophisticated analysis.

One of the greatest strengths of this newly discovered tool within MINE is its ability to detect and analyze a broad spectrum of patterns and characterize them according to a number of different parameters a researcher might be interested in. Other statistical tools work well for searching for a specific pattern in a large data set, but cannot score and compare different kinds of possible relationships. Researchers can also use MINE to generate new ideas and connections.
