CORVALLIS, Ore. The same "green revolution" concepts that have revolutionized crop agriculture and helped to feed billions of people around the world may now offer similar potential in forestry, scientists say, with benefits for wood, biomass production, drought stress and even greenhouse gas mitigation.

Researchers at Oregon State University recently outlined the latest findings on reduced height growth in trees through genetic modification, and concluded that several advantageous growth traits could be achieved for short-rotation forestry, bioenergy, or more efficient water use in a drier, future climate.

This approach runs contrary to conventional wisdom and centuries of tree breeding, which tried to produce forest trees that grow larger and taller, the researchers note. But just as the green revolution in agriculture helped crops such as wheat and rice produce more food on smaller, sturdier plants, the opportunities in forestry could be significant.

"Research now makes it clear that genetic modification of height growth is achievable," said Steven Strauss, an OSU professor of forest genetics. "We understand the genes and hormones that control growth not only in crop plants, but also in trees. They are largely the same."

In a study published in Plant Physiology, researchers inserted a number of genes into poplar trees, a species often used for genetic experiments, and valuable for wood, environmental and energy purposes. They described 29 genetic traits that were affected, including growth rate, biomass production, branching, water-use efficiency, and root structure. All of the changes were from modified gibberellins, plant hormones that influence several aspects of growth and development.

The range and variation in genetic modification can be accurately observed and selected for, based on hormone and gene expression levels, to allow production of trees of almost any height.

For example, for ornamental purposes it would be possible to grow a miniature poplar, or even a Douglas-fir, as a potted plant.

And because height growth, in competition for sunlight, is a primary mechanism that trees use to compete for survival, there would be reduced concern about use of such genetically modified trees in a natural environment. On a long-term basis they would be unable to compete, shaded by larger trees and ultimately they would die out.

Scientists could also produce trees that might have a larger root mass, which should make them more drought-resistant, increase water use efficiency, increase elimination of soil toxins and better sequester carbon. This could be useful for greenhouse gas mitigation, bioremediation or erosion control.

Smaller trees could also be selected that have sturdier trunks for some uses in short-rotation plantation forestry, significantly reducing the number of trees blown down by wind. And shorter, thicker and straighter trunks might create higher-value wood products in many tree species, Strauss said.

Some semi-dwarf trees produced by conventional tree breeding techniques are already an important part of the horticulture industry, allowing easier harvesting of fruit and higher yields. Genetic modification could add new characteristics and more scientific precision to the process, researchers said.

"The main limitation is the onerous regulatory structure for genetically-modified plants in the United States," Strauss said. "Even short, safe and beneficial trees are unlikely to be able to bear the high costs and red tape inherent to obtaining regulatory approval."

Apple?s A6 CPU Is Faster Than Previously Reported, Clocked At 1.3GHz With Latest Geekbench Build

iphoneSpeaking of?trusting early reports, it seems that the A6 used in the iPhone 5 runs at 1.3GHz rather than 1GHz as previously reported. This comes from the latest build of the iOS benchmarking software, Geekbench, which just released its iOS 6 version today. Earlier builds clocked the iPhone 5 at 1GHz. But now that the software is compiled for iOS 6, it seems the A6 is slightly faster, and both CPU cores run at 1.3GHz.

Rescuers search for missing on Nepal mountain

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? Rescue helicopters flew over the high slopes of a northern Nepal peak on Monday to search for climbers lost in an avalanche that killed at least nine mountaineers and injured others. Many of the climbers were French, German and Italian.

The avalanche hit at about 4 a.m. Sunday while more than two dozen climbers were still sleeping in their tents high on the world's eighth-tallest peak, Mount Manaslu, said Dolraj Dhakal, government administrator in the area. He said no one saw it coming and they were unable describe its size.

Rescuers brought down eight bodies by midday Monday and were trying to retrieve the ninth from the 7,000-meter (22,960-foot) area where the avalanche struck, police Chief Basanta Bahadur Kuwar said. Four helicopters were searching by air and climbers and guides were searching the slopes on foot.

At least six more climbers were believed to be still missing. Kuwar said the identities of the climbers killed and missing were still unclear.

The French Foreign Ministry said four French climbers were among the dead and two others were missing. Three French climbers were pulled from the snow and taken by helicopter to a hospital in Katmandu, it said.

"The situation continues to evolve, due to the atmospheric conditions," it said in a statement Monday.

Spain's Foreign Ministry said one Spanish climber was killed.

Ten climbers survived, but many of them were injured and were flown to hospitals by rescue helicopters. Two Germans were transported to hospitals in Katmandu on Sunday, and two Italians were flown there Monday.

Italian, German and French teams were on the mountain, with a total of 231 climbers and guides, but not all were at the higher camps hit by the avalanche.

Sunday's avalanche came at the start of Nepal's autumn climbing season, when the end of the monsoon rains makes weather in the high Himalayas unpredictable. Spring is a more popular mountaineering season, when hundreds of climbers crowd the high Himalayan peaks.

Mount Manaslu is 8,156 meters (26,760 feet) high and has attracted more climbers recently because it is considered one of the easier peaks to climb among the world's tallest mountains.

Nepal has eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world. Climbers have complained in recent years that conditions on the mountains have deteriorated and risks of accidents have increased.

Veteran guide Apa, who has climbed Mount Everest a record 21 times, traveled across Nepal earlier this year campaigning about the effects of global warming on the mountains.

He told The Associated Press the mountains now have considerably less ice and snow, making it harder for climbers to use ice axes and crampons on their boots to get a grip on the slopes.

Loose snow also increases the risk of avalanches. The cause of Sunday's avalanche was not immediately determined.

Avalanches are not very frequent on Mount Manaslu, but in 1972 one struck a team of climbers and killed six Koreans and 10 Nepalese guides.

Ang Tshering of the Asian Trekking agency in Katmandu, who has equipped hundreds of expeditions, said the low level of snow and increased number of climbers on Manaslu has made climbing conditions difficult.

"It used to be a low-risk mountain in the past but now that has all changed," Tshering said, adding that conditions have become more unpredictable.

Why Apple Doesn't Have Google Maps - Business Insider

Apple's iPhone 5 launch has been overshadowed by the company's new mapping application.

Previously, Apple used Google's data for its maps app. Now it's using a blended mix of two dozen data partners, with TomTom the primary map data provider.

The new maps are different, which will always cause some angst for users. There are also reports that the maps are inaccurate, sending people the wrong direction, or to wrong locations. Also, Apple didn't include public transit data, thus making the maps inherently inferior to Google's maps app.

We've been testing the app for a week now, and while it has drawbacks compared to the Google-based maps, it also has its advantages. The maps are better-looking, smoother, and include turn-by-turn directions.

Still, at best Apple maps are a lateral move, not a step up. Apple, being Apple, didn't tell people it was going to replace Google maps with a first-generation product that needs some work. On its iOS 6 page, Apple calls maps "the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever," adding, "you won?t get lost."

Despite Apple's claims, the maps are not the "most powerful," and do get some people lost. As a result, many people are mad at Apple.

So why would Apple take such a big risk with one of the core applications of one of its most important products?? The easy answer would be to say that Apple is an arrogant control freak that wants to force its own maps on helpless users, but in reality it is a complicated mix of different factors.

While Google likes to call itself an open company, the truth is that it's as ruthlessly controlling as any major corporation. It wouldn't let Apple do certain things with Google-based maps, according to Dr. Ed Lu, a former Google employee who worked on maps. Lu wouldn't say exactly what Google restricted, but he hinted that Apple couldn't get turn-by-turn directions for its maps.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball said on his podcast that Google's maps on the iPhone were made with bitmaps, which load slower. Apple's new maps are vector based, which is why they're smoother and load faster. Gruber says Google wouldn't let Apple do vector-based maps with Google's data.

Screenshot

Turn by turn on the iPhone is gorgeous and works well in our limited testing.

So, as good as Apple's maps with Google data were, they were being limited by restrictions Google imposed on Apple.

Apple was in negotiations with Google to overcome some of these restrictions, but the negotiations broke down. We've heard from two sources that Apple executives have been frustrated with Google over the way it controls the maps data.

With negotiations broken down, Apple had to build a new maps app.

Apple would have eventually built its own maps application, anyway. Maps are one of the most important apps on the phone. Apple couldn't let a third party like Google play such an influential role over a key feature of the phone.

Each year the gap between the iPhone and Android phones gets narrowed. If Apple can make a mapping application that is significantly better than Google, it's a key differentiator for consumers.

Unfortunately for Apple, its first pass at maps is not significantly better. But, contrary to much of the bluster out there, it's not significantly worse.

Apple maps are the first iteration of an extremely complicated product. With time, Apple will gather more data, and refine the product. That doesn't do much to sate people who expect the absolute best from Apple. And thus, the maps app is the dominant story, not the fact that Apple released its best ever phone.

Five questions for Romney's Medicare plan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Medicare is the one health insurance plan that will cover virtually every American at some point in life, and Republican Mitt Romney is proposing the biggest changes since its creation nearly 50 years ago.

With important details still hazy, The Associated Press asked the Romney campaign five questions about how his Medicare plan would affect consumers on critical matters of costs and benefits.

Some of the questions remained unresolved after the campaign's responses. It may take electing Romney to find out how his plan would work. (The AP also sent President Barack Obama's campaign a set of questions about his plans for Medicare, and those responses are the subject of a companion report.)

"One of the things that concerns me about both campaigns is that they tend to use jargon terms like 'competition' or 'protection for benefits' without spelling out how they would deal with the challenges that come up," said economist Marilyn Moon, a former trustee overseeing Medicare finances. "Their answer is to attack the other side, or simply reinforce the same jargon, rather than explaining how things would work."

Broadly speaking, Romney calls for shifting people now age 54 and younger into a different sort of Medicare. Once eligible, these people would get a fixed payment from the government, adjusted for inflation, to pay for either private insurance or a government plan modeled on Medicare. Current beneficiaries and those nearing retirement could stay in the traditional program.

Romney says it's time for bold action because Medicare faces insolvency in 2024, the tip of its long-term financing woes. Private insurance plans would get waste out of the system while protecting quality and affordability, he says.

Some Medicare questions for consumers to keep in mind, along with answers from the Romney campaign and the views of several experts:

Q: What happens if Romney's fixed health insurance payment for future retirees fails to keep up with rising medical costs?

A: Thousands of dollars in costs could get shifted to retirees, punching holes in household budgets. Health care inflation is now in a lull, but historically it has grown faster than the economy, overall inflation and workers' wages.

Romney's campaign says his goal is to avoid cost shifting and to secure for future Medicare beneficiaries affordable coverage options at least as good as what's available for today's seniors. Lower-income Medicare recipients would get more money from the government for their health insurance.

Competition among insurers will keep costs in check, says the Romney campaign. The government payment will be based on competitive bids. "As plans compete with each other to provide better care more efficiently, the growth in (health) costs will slow dramatically and place Medicare on a sustainable long-term footing," writes Romney policy director Lanhee Chen.

Earlier this year, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office analyzed a similar Medicare plan by Romney's running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan. It found that by 2030, seven years after the proposal would take effect, Medicare would be spending about $2,200 less on a typical 66-year-old than would be the case under current policies.

That may not be a problem if competition works. But Obama's first Medicare administrator says the numbers are so big he doesn't see how Romney can avoid cost shifting.

"I would hope through quality improvements we can mitigate rate increases. But Romney has not been clear about how he will cause improvements in care to happen," said Don Berwick. "I think the consequences will be that costs will continue to rise."

Tom Scully, Medicare administrator under President George W. Bush, says Congress would intervene to make up the difference. "The reality is if inflation outstrips that payment, Congress will probably make an adjustment," said Scully.

Q: Will there be a set of guaranteed benefits that private plans must cover in Romney's revamped Medicare?

A: The question is important because having a basic set of benefits would allow consumers to make apples-to-apples comparisons among plans. The Medicare prescription drug program and private insurance plans currently available through Medicare Advantage have a floor of protection.

The Romney campaign website says, "All insurance plans must offer coverage at least comparable to what Medicare provides today."

Some experts say that's too vague. "Comparable" can mean similar in dollar value, but quite different in terms of coverage. Insurance companies can design benefits to cherry-pick healthier customers. A high co-payment for home health care, for example, would discourage frail patients.

Romney said Sunday on "60 Minutes" that private plans will have to offer "the same benefits" as traditional Medicare, but did not get into details.

Q: Romney has said he would repeal Obama's health care overhaul. Would he reinstate Medicare benefits improved by the law? They include closing the prescription drug coverage gap ? the "doughnut hole" ? and expanding coverage of preventive care with no copays.

A: The campaign is silent on this issue, although Vice President Joe Biden is hammering the GOP nominee, saying Romney's repeal of the health law would lead to an immediate loss of benefits for millions of current Medicare recipients.

"I think it would be very hard for (Romney) to take that away," said Berwick.

Q: Romney would turn the Medicaid program for low-income people over to the states, sharply limiting its future growth. The costliest Medicaid cases are some 9 million elderly and disabled people who also have Medicare, more than 1 million of them in nursing homes. Would Romney require states to institute special protections for this vulnerable group?

A: The campaign says Medicaid spending would grow under Romney's plan, and states will have the flexibility to design programs that serve low-income people most effectively. But several experts said the federal government also has to require accountability from states.

"If there is no protection for these people a lot of states are going to start knocking them off the rolls," said former AARP CEO Bill Novelli, now at Georgetown University in Washington. "These are the most vulnerable among us. There has to be a way to deal with Medicaid without leaving it entirely to the states."

Q: Romney's privatization plan would not affect current beneficiaries or anyone joining Medicare before 2023. But does Romney also guarantee that he will protect traditional Medicare from any future cuts?

A: The campaign is silent on this issue. Moon, the former trustee, says it's an important question, and deserves an answer.

"I would be very nervous about remaining in a program that it has been announced is going away," said Moon, now with the nonpartisan American Institutes for Research. "Because there will be fewer and fewer people who will speak up for it over time."

On "60 Minutes," Romney said: "I don't want any change to Medicare for current seniors or for those that are nearing retirement. So the plan stays exactly the same."

Still, it's unclear if that means a guarantee of no future cuts for those remaining in traditional Medicare, or if Romney is merely saying that the overall design of the program will stay the same.

Ready To Be A Mom: Welcome Home

If you have read any of my posts in the past few months, you may have noticed my schedule is just a teensy bit full lately. Between entertaining out of town guests, travels of our own, moving into our new home and the daily in and outs of everyday life I feel like I have barely been able to take a breath lately, let alone think about how I feel about all of the things that have been happening. I have however been trying my absolute best to live in and enjoy every moment of all of these events both big and small.?

For starters, we had an amazing time on our first trip without Eliana. I was so nervous that I wouldn't be able to enjoy myself but in the end all three of us benefited from the trip. Chad and I were able to spend quality time with each other and our friends and Eliana had an amazing time with her grandparents. And absolutely nothing compared with the moment we came home to her excited smiles and endless hugs. She spent the entire afternoon after we got home running back and forth between the two of us giggling and throwing herself into full body hugs and kisses. I melt all over again just thinking about it.?

We didn't have long to stop and reflect on the fun we had though because the next day we threw ourselves straight into moving and it's been non-stop since. It has been so busy that I haven't had time to really reflect on leaving the home we inhabited for the past three years. Yeah, it's just an apartment, but so much happened there. This was where we lived when we came to California from Florida without a friend or family member within 1000 miles, when it was literally just the two of us against the world. This was where we held each other and cried after so many BFNs, where we hoped things would "just fall into place". We were in that apartment when we decided to pursue IVF. We where there for both of the phone calls that gave us the news that I was pregnant. We holed up together in that living room crying and mourning the loss of my first pregnancy. I will never forget the days I spent in that bedroom on bedrest after my FET, hoping that Snow Pea was snuggling in as I watched "Gone With the Wind" and relaxed to the hum of our new window a/c as the 115 heat wave roared outside nor will I forget any moment of the pregnancy that followed and all of the excited hopeful moments that it contained. Taking apart the desk and guest bed to make room for a crib and changing table, hanging vinyl star decals on the freshly painted nursery walls, baking spicy labor cookies in the tiny kitchen, saying goodbye to our life as a couple as we left for the hospital and hello to our life as a family when we returned home with Snow Pea in our arms.?

That apartment is where Eliana laughed for the first time, spoke her first words and took her first steps. There are so many amazing and important memories there and it is bittersweet leaving the place where so many important moments in my life took place. But it's not just the past I am sad to say goodbye to. In the past few months we have become close with the neighbors that live next door to us. They have a son just a bit older than Eliana and the two of them have a blast playing together. And the four of us adults have a great time just hanging out, talking and laughing together. The first time we sat on the patio together chatting, we were there until 3am, not realizing just how late it was. Becoming parents isn't exactly easy on your social life and having friends we genuinely liked and clicked with right next door was pretty incredible. We got to feel like our Saturday nights were fun again while still having the comfort of being just a few steps away from our baby girl. Of course, we are maintaining our friendship with them but we are definitely sad to give them up as neighbors. I know it's just a place, just four walls and a roof but I can't help but feel a connection to that place. I probably always will. It is after all where I lived for what has turned out to be the most significant three years of my life.

We are officially living in our new house (yes that is a picture of it- LOVE!) and we really do love it here. This house has more space, heaps more character and a great yard complete with white picket fence. We are just two blocks from the park and five blocks from downtown and all kinds of fantastic cafes, coffee shops and antique stores. But there is still plenty left to do until we are "settled". Luckily, Snow Pea loves the new house and only really lost sleep our first night here. Since then, she has become pretty comfortable and happy in her new digs. Speaking of happy, that is her new favorite word. She started saying it last week and hasn't stopped. It is absolutely, unbelievably heart melting to hear! I ask her if she is a happy baby girl then she responds with a giant smile and giggle before exclaiming "happy! happy! happy!" over and over again. It's the best. She has a few other new words too. She loves saying apple, up, baby, book, ball and her two best friends names Avery and JoJo. All of which she has learned since our move. She even said her very first sentence the other day! I asked her what she wanted to do and she said "go outside walk!" It was astounding! It is incredible to witness and experience every new day with her. She is developing such a fun, goofy and lovable personality and after only a week in the new house she has already created so many wonderful memories here. I can't wait to experience and create even more, maybe one day as a family of four.

elm street life: Baby shower, in pictures.

I was blessed to be given a beautiful baby shower for Baby L this weekend with some precious family and friends. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking, but I'm just so thankful looking through these - not only for all the amazing gifts we received, but mostly for the love and support I felt by all these women I've known for so many years. Baby L is already very loved, and that means the world to me.

Instead of a game, I requested we do a DIY project - so we decorated onesies! We had lots of iron-on fabric prepped and some shapes for inspiration, and we went from there. I wish I had a picture of each one... they turned out adorable. I can't wait to see him wearing them and think of the hands that made them for him. :)

Thank you, sweet friends!

Brees throws an O-fer in 4th quarter and OT as Chiefs triumph 27-24

NEW ORLEANS - Who dat? More like WTF?

The winless New Orleans Saints dropped another one Sunday, this time in overtime at home to the previously inless Kansas City Chiefs.

Drew Brees passed for 240 yards and three touchdowns but missed all six of his passes through the fourth quarter and overtime.

Ryan Succop kicked six field goals, one to force overtime in the final seconds and another from 31 yards to lift the Chiefs to a 27-24 victory over the Saints.

Succop's 43-yard field goal with 3 seconds left completed a methodical comeback by Kansas City (1-2) after the Saints (0-3) had cashed in on a pair of Chiefs turnovers to go ahead 24-6 in the third quarter.

Kansas City needed only one touchdown for the win, a 91-yard run by Jamaal Charles, who finished with 233 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving.

The Chiefs also got a safety in the fourth quarter on Justin Houston's third sack of the game.

Ed Sabol founded NFL Films in 1964, and along with son Steve, made it into the video and multimedia producing powerhouse it is today. NFL Films produces weekly NFL shows, team season highlight reels, and long-form profiles of NFL players and coaches.

Steve Sabol passed away on Tuesday after a long illness. Tributes to his NFL contributions are numerous.

"Steve Sabol was the creative genius behind the remarkable work of NFL Films," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement to the Associated Press. "Steve's passion for football was matched only by his talent and energy. He was a major contributor to the success of the NFL, a man who changed the way we looked at football and sports, and a great friend."

Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann measured Sabol's impact on the NFL by referencing the human anatomy.

"When you look at NFL Films, you're really watching the blood flow through the veins of the NFL. And Steve was the heart," the Super Bowl champion told USA Today.

One constant memory for this writer was the first time seeing the NFL Films staple, "Football Follies." Watching footage of pro football players collide, fly through the air, or bobble the ball, set to music, made for an enjoyable viewing experience.

And the music, oh the music. NFL Films hired composer Sam Spence in the mid-1960s to come up with the melodies we've heard hundreds of times before with various game highlights and player profiles. Even today, you can hear NFL Films music used in other entertainment programs, like Nickelodeon's 'SpongeBob SquarePants.' The music, combined with the voices of veteran broadcasters like John Facenda, Harry Kalas, and Pat Summerall helped to tell the story of the National Football League.

Much of this would not have been possible without the artistic vision of Steve Sabol and the talented folks at NFL Films, who will now carry on in his memory.

Arkansas coach Smith bankruptcy shows $25.7M debt

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? Arkansas coach John L. Smith is trying to wipe away $25.7 million in debt in bankruptcy court and hang onto $1.2 million in retirement accounts and some personal property, all while he leads the Razorbacks through one of the strangest seasons in team history.

Smith, who loudly implored reporters to "smile" at a press conference this week, has a meeting with a long list of creditors at U.S. Bankruptcy court in Fayetteville on Oct. 12, the day before the Razorbacks host Kentucky.

Smith was coaching Louisville when he began investing in real estate, which he has said, was profitable until land values took a nosedive. Smith filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Sept. 6, and court papers filed Wednesday detail the depth of his financial losses.

As of the filing, Smith had received $115,000 from his 10-month, $850,000 contract with Arkansas, plus $35,643 from his alma mater, Weber State, which he left before coaching a game to return to Fayetteville after Bobby Petrino's firing. He also picked up $9,810 from Nike and $1,057 from a football camp, according to the court documents.

Smith has two retirement accounts, each worth about $600,000, which his filing lists as exempt from liquidation, along with household furnishings.

The filing lists 26 unsecured creditors, with the largest debt ? $20 million ? claimed by Terra Springs LLC of Louisville. Other debts include $2 million to Republic Bank and $902,000 to King Southern Bank, both in Louisville. He also owes about $10,000 to American Express.

Smith paid $20,000 up front to his attorney, Jill Jacoway of Fayetteville. She wasn't in her office Thursday and didn't immediately respond to email requests for comment.

Once the Chapter 7 proceeding is complete, Smith will be released from the debts, assuming there are no ensuing complications.

Smith revealed his financial problems to The Associated Press during the summer, saying he anticipated a bankruptcy filing and that he didn't want it to distract the team or embarrass the university. Athletic director Jeff Long said at the time that Smith was candid about his debt situation in talks before he was hired.

"It's something that's happened. I made some mistakes, and to be honest with you, I'm a football coach, not a businessman," Smith said at the time.

Since declaring bankruptcy on Sept. 6, then-No. 8 Arkansas lost in overtime to Louisiana-Monroe, 34-31, and was shutout by No. 1 Alabama, 52-0. Starting quarterback Tyler Wilson was knocked out of the Louisiana-Monroe game with a head injury and other key players have been sidelined by injuries.

All this followed Petrino's April 1 motorcycle crash, which led to revelations he had his 25-year-old mistress on the back of the bike and that he'd hired her for an on-campus recruiting job. Long fired Petrino 10 days after the accident.

The Razorbacks (1-2) are preparing to host Rutgers (3-0) on Saturday. It remains unclear whether Wilson will be under center.

Business making an anti-regulation pitch to voters

(AP) ? Three leading business organizations are working to make the anti-regulatory fervor their members share an issue in the last weeks of the fall campaign.

The National Association of Manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have taken out issue ads saying the expense to business in complying with federal regulations is killing job creation.

Local affiliates of the National Federation of Independent Business are conducting tours and news conferences to let small business owners present their personal stories.

The NFIB has hired former Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas to coordinate the anti-regulatory campaign. So far the federation has endorsed only two Democratic candidates for Congress compared with at least 30 in the GOP.

New iPod touch, iPod nano, iPod shuffle now available for pre-order from Amazon

If you've had your eyes on a new iPod touch, iPod nano, or iPod shuffle, but prefer doing your pre-ordering through Amazon than Apple, you're in luck -- Amazon has just put their new iPod pre-order page live!

It's the same iPod touch, iPod nano, and iPod shuffle you'd get from Apple -- absent the Apple exclusive Product (RED) versions -- and you'll likely get them around the same time as you would if you ordered from Apple, but options are good, and Amazon is one of the best.

  • The new iPod touch has the same 4-inch 16:9 display as the iPhone 5, as good a camera as the iPhone 4, along with an even thinner design, and a convenient carrying loop. Comes in 7 colors.

  • The new iPod nano has a home button, a wider-screen display, and is even thinner than the touch. Also has Bluetooth at long last. (What will Apple do with that?)

  • The new iPod shuffle isn't really that new, aside from matching the new colors of the other two. Still, cheap and convenient.

So, if you want to pre-order your new iPod from Amazon, you can do so via the link below. (iMore is an Amazon affiliate, so you'll be supporting the site at the same time -- win, win, win.)

German lawmakers see signs of far-right cover up

BERLIN (AP) ? German lawmakers investigating a string of far-right murders said Monday there appeared to have been a cover up by officials who withheld key information on the authorities' contacts with neo-Nazis linked to the case.

Members of the cross-party committee set up to probe 10 suspected neo-Nazi killings between 2000 and 2007 have previously voiced frustration that law enforcement agencies appeared to have held back evidence ? and in at least two instances shredded material.

Their anger reached another peak following revelations last week that a mole in the far-right scene gave Berlin police information in 2002 that could have led to the arrest of the three main suspects in the murders.

"That the (parliamentary) investigation committee wasn't informed seems to have been intentional," its chairman, Sebastian Edathy, told The Associated Press. "Only when we've seen the files will we be able to get a clear picture," he said, before adding: "This is the most serious failure yet by the authorities."

Fellow lawmaker Hans-Christian Stroebele went further, accusing security officials in the state of Berlin of deliberately lying to lawmakers.

"Twice we asked them whether they had anything that was of relevance to the investigation committee," Stroebele told rbb-Inforadio. "They didn't tell us anything. On the contrary, we were told they had nothing. That can only be described as a lie."

Frank Henkel, Berlin's state interior minister, is scheduled to make a statement Tuesday on his department's failure to reveal that from 2000 to 2011 it had an informer with close links to the so-called National Socialist Underground. The group is alleged to have killed nine immigrants and a policewoman over a seven-year period.

Two of the NSU's three core members were found dead after an apparent murder-suicide last November. The third, Beate Zschaepe, is in custody.

German media have reported that the informer is one of 13 people ? including Zschaepe ? against whom federal prosecutors are now preparing indictments.

The office of federal prosecutors declined to confirm the reports.

On Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel weighed in, saying her government was intent on clearing up the entire affair.

"In countless places the investigation isn't working the way it should, and the way I think it should," she told reporters. "Some consequences have already been drawn, others must still be drawn."

Four senior German domestic intelligence officials have already resigned in recent months over the authorities' failures in the National Socialist Underground case.

Nevada's Fajardo racks up big dual-threat numbers

The season is now three weeks old, and the stats are proving what defensive coordinators have known for years.

A dual threat quarterback is still the most dangerous weapon an offense can have.

___

DUAL THREAT TRIO: Michigan's Denard Robinson and Ohio State's Braxton Miller are the nation's most prominent dual-threat quarterbacks.

They're both looking up at Nevada's Cody Fajardo in the stat book.

Robinson, Miller and Fajardo are the only quarterbacks in the nation with at least 1,000 yards passing and 300 yards rushing this season. But Fajardo has more yards of total offense per game than either of his more famous counterparts after running for 118 yards and three touchdowns and throwing for 237 yards and a score in Saturday's 45-34 win over Northwestern State.

Fajardo has 362.3 yards of offense per game, good for eighth-best in the nation. Robinson is ninth at 350 yards a game, and Miller is 12th after throwing for a season-high 249 yards and four TDs in a dramatic 35-28 win over California.

___

GENO ON POINT: West Virginia's Geno Smith doesn't need to use his feet to beat up on opposing defenses.

Smith is 66 of 75 passing for 734 yards and nine touchdowns through two games. He's got as many passing TDs as incompletions and his 88 percent completion percentage leads the nation.

Smith might not find as many open receivers starting this week when the Mountaineers (2-0) face Maryland. West Virginia then starts its first season in the Big 12 by hosting Baylor on Sept. 29.

Based on Smith's passing prowess, the Mountaineers should fit right in to their new league.

___

BAD START: Massachusetts could use a dual-threat quarterback ? and pretty much everything else.

UMass, in its first season in the FBS, is last nationally in scoring offense and defense. The Minutemen are scoring 6.5 points per game and giving up 48.3 after getting blown out by Robinson and the Wolverines 63-13.

UMass (0-3) is also the only team in the country gaining less than 200 yards a game and one of just nine allowing more than 500 per outing.

___

RUSHING STARS: UCLA freshman quarterback Brett Hundley can run when he needs to.

He's quickly learned that it's better to turn around and hand it to Johnathan Franklin.

Franklin and Nevada's Stefphon Jefferson are the only players in the country with over 500 yards rushing this season. Franklin maintained his national lead despite a season-low 110 yards on 25 carries in a 37-6 win over Houston. Franklin has 541 yards, and Jefferson has 529 after exploding for 247 yards in Saturday's win over Northwestern State.

Fresno State's Robbie Rouse is third with 382 yards rushing.

___

SEMINOLE SHUTDOWN: Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd will take touchdowns any way he can get them next weekend in Tallahassee.

Florida State (3-0) leads the nation in points allowed per game at 1 having pitched a pair of shutouts after allowing a field goal in a season-opening win over Murray State.

The Tigers are scoring nearly 40 points per game behind Boyd, a junior. But they'll be hard-pressed to match that total against the Seminoles.

___

EXTRA POINTS: Ohio State's Braxton Miller is also the only quarterback ranked in the top 10 in rushing yards per game with 125.7 ... Utah's Sean Sellwood leads the nation with 48.9 yards per punt. ... Louisiana-Monroe, which nearly knocked off Auburn on Saturday after stunning Arkansas, is averaging 37:02 in time of possession. ... Oklahoma State has reached its opponent's red zone 20 times in three games and has scored every time. The Cowboys have settled for field goals inside their opponent's 20 twice. ... It's no surprise that Alabama is the nation's top-ranked team. The Crimson Tide leads the country in turnover margin, with 12 takeaways against just one turnover.
