'Solid community and family man' tribute

FIRST PHOTO: Maui Interscholastic League paddlers, coaches and officials pay tribute to longtime canoe racing official and volunteer William Kalanikai Gonzales on Saturday in Kaanapali. Crews paddled flowers out and dropped them into the water of the regatta course.

SECOND PHOTO: Other participants on shore blew conch shells.

THIRD PHOTO: More participants carrying flowers, chanted in Hawaiian.

Longtime friend Cornelio Bancaco (not pictured) said Gonzales gathered food from the ocean for his family since he was a child. "How appropriate that they moved the regatta here to honor him," Bancaco said. "The MIL honoring him that way says a lot about the man. He's a solid community and family man." Gonzales was fatally struck by a boat Dec. 29 while he was in waters off Hanakoo Beach Park, preparing lanes for a high school canoe paddling race.
