Detroit Sleeps Through Chinese SUV Boom | The Truth About Cars

SUVs are one of the strongest segments in an otherwise lackluster Chinese car market. Who slept through this trend? The kingdom of trucks, Detroit. ?Instead, Japanese and Korean makers prevail in the compact segment, while German companies dominate the luxury segment,? writes Reuters in an article about China?s infatuation with SUVs.

In China, 2.1 million SUVs were sold last year, up 25.3 percent from 2010, reaching 11.6 percent of light vehicle sales, data by J.D. Power and LMC Automotive show. In the same period, the Chinese market as a whole eked out only a small 2.45 percent gain. China already buys about half of the 4.1 million SUVs sold in the United States last year. A monster market, ignored by American SUVs.

Despite a very strong Chinese presence by GM, and a not so strong presence by Ford, U.S. makers are not leveraging their SUV strength in a market that has a hot love affair with SUVs. America is leaving piles of money on the table, snapped up by the Japanese and the Germans.

Honda?s CR-V leads the list of best-selling SUVs in China with 160,000 sold in 2011. Nissan?s Qashqai, Hyundai?s iX35, Toyota?s Highlander, RAV4 and Kia?s Sportage SL are also on the top-10 list.?Nissan saw SUV sales at its China joint venture surge 48.3 percent in 2011.

The luxury SUV segment is growing even faster than ?overall SUV sales. A total of 285,704 luxury SUVs were sold in the country in 2011, four times the 2009 level. Market share climbed to 13.7 percent from 8.4 percent, J.D. Power and LMC statistics show.

Audi?s Q5 topped the luxury SUV seller list last year. Audi will soon make the Q3 at its Changchun plant. China-made Mercedes-Benz GLKs and the BMW X1 rank second and third on the top-seller list. Mercedes sold 54,000 SUVs in China last year, accounting for 27 percent of its total China sales in 2011.

And the Americans?

GM has started to make the Buick Encore SUV locally. Ford plans to build the Kuga and possibly EcoSport SUVs in China. Chrysler might do local assembly of the Jeep Cherokee.

We've been trawling Barcelona for apps and startups during Mobile World Congress, so here's a little round-up of some of those that have been plying their wares - many of whom don't have the cash to exhibit at the official Congress, but who are pitching like mad in the hotel bars of Barcelona. BearCare from Tagofjoy is an Augmented Reality game with a freemium business model. In the game you have to protect your beloved helpless Teddy Bear and cuddle him to keep him happy (go with it, it gets better). The fun part is that it takes place in a real environment, which is blended with lively and playful 3D bears. The games ha two modes. One is a fast-paced action game, in which you have to protect your helpless bear from unearthly, evil toy bears. Another mode lets you take care of him and keep him happy by cuddling him, playing with him and feeding him when he gets hungry. It's a Tamagotchi basically, but re-done for a new world. PlayTales is a an interesting virtual store and publishing platform. It publishes interactive children?s ebooks in 7 languages on Android, iPad, iPhone, Windows Phone and soon a flash web site. It's basically a dream come true for parents who want to read stories to their kids on an iPad. Mafuta Go! is a one from left field for you. Coming out of Uganda, this is an app that lets users find the nearest gas station with the cheapest prices. Should you need that. It's worth also pointing out that Swiftkey, which we've covered before, won the official GMA award for most innovative app, beating Google Wallet. Here's a few others:

Apple says iCloud and MobileMe push email down in Germany, due to Motorola lawsuit (Update)

Cupertino says it is has suspended push email via iCloud or MobileMe for users in Germany, due to "recent patent litigation by Motorola Mobility." Voice over IP or VoIP is fast becoming accepted as a communications platform. The purpose of this paper is to describe the particular challenges with VoIP over satellite, including the inherent latency of satellite connections and their effect on VoIP quality.

At Galaxy Broadband we have been involved with VoIP over satellite for many years and understand the unique advantages and disadvantages users of this technology are faced with. We have experimented with various hardware and software configurations and service providers over the years with both success and failure. This paper will provide background of the issues and present our recommendations.

Who Should Consider Using VoIP Over Satellite

If you are contemplating purchasing a satellite Internet system just so you can eliminate your telephone company and save $35.00 a month, we suggest you reconsider. Voice over Satellite Internet should be considered as a viable option only if you do not have a reliable wired telephone line. Those in remote areas where cell phone, radiophones, or satellite phones are the only options to communicate with the outside world can benefit from this technology and should seriously evaluate the benefits, including cost savings.

VoIP as a Technology

VoIP begins when a regular telephone is connected to a local device called an ATA or VoIP router. This device converts actual sound waves into data packets by way of a process referred to as a codec. Not all codecs are equal, and it?s very important that the user use the right one, especially when using a satellite connection. These packets travel in the same way as data packets to a destination (VoIP Service Provider) where they are converted back from data packets to sound waves for the calling number to hear.

An amusing story we like to tell about VoIP over satellite Internet is about a geologist working at a drilling location in Northern Alberta. Prior to installing his new system, the geologist had to drive several miles to a hilltop to make a cell phone call which was usually hit or miss whether it connected at all. Given his daily billing rate this was an expensive proposition, let alone the inconvenience factor. His newly installed satellite Internet configured for VoIP offered calling from the comfort of his camp but if the connection halted or missed in any way, even a single syllable missing, he would immediately complain and cuss about the technology! Why would he react this way when 99% of his calls were good enough to carry on a conversation? You won?t see him or anyone else tossing a cell phone out the window during frequent ?burps? so why the lack of tolerance in VoIP? The answer lies in a peculiar perception about VoIP created by a combination of expectations in new technology and popular culture.

VoIP over Satellite Internet works, but it?s not perfect. In fact, VoIP is not a perfected technology in itself, let alone the additional complications due to the satellite link. The voice quality can be quite good, often better than a cell phone call, but it is definitely not toll quality to most modern terrestrial telephone networks.

Satellite Latency and its Affect on VoIP

Latency is the term that describes the time it takes to get a packet to its destination. It is usually expressed in milliseconds, or ms. Since the satellites are located 23,000 miles above the equator, and satellite signals travel at the speed of light, this journey takes approximately 540 ms. You then add on the latency of the various Internet hops and servers plus the VoIP provider?s network to end with a total latency in the range of 650 ms to 700ms or more depending on the state of the Internet itself. Another contributing factor could be the quality of your satellite signal which may cause packets to be resent. This latency is heard as a delay between the sender and the receiving ear. Users of VoIP over satellite need to learn how to communicate with this inherent latency much like the older press-to-talk radio phones. Further, the delay requires the users to be patient and refrain from interrupting the caller.

VoIP on the Ground

Even using terrestrial low latency connections, VoIP is still facing challenges due to the multiple hops and connections of the Internet itself. The technology is good, and likely getting better, but still not perfect.

Shared Networks over Satellite

Satellite Service Providers offer service plans in two major categories. The lowest price group are referred to as best effort networks designed for general Internet access for a typical home, farm, or small business with web surfing and email the primary uses. The second category are commercial grade connectivity plans with Quality of Service. Quality of Service or QoS is an industry term for networks that offer end users specific optimization and performance assurances and tend to be closely managed.

Both of theses network types are shared networks meaning the available bandwidth is shared among all users. Virtually all Internet access providers including cable and DSL share their bandwidth with multiple users, but since satellite space is much more expensive than local wires, the satellite services tend to have more users to share the cost. The price is a good indication of the number of users sharing the available bandwidth. Given a similar speed offering, the lower the price the more users share the available space. Overloaded networks will result in fluctuating performance.

?Best Effort Plans? Networks

As the term implies, packets sent and received arrive at their respective destinations at the earliest possible time depending upon the traffic. No users or particular applications receive priority. All home or small office Service Plans offered by virtually all internet access service providers on satellite or terrestrial are ?best effort?. The price per month is a good indicator as to the number of users allowed on the network as the more on, the lower the cost to all. This results in fluctuating speeds depending upon the time of day. Peak times like evenings or after school gets out tend to have more users on the network as compared to early in the morning. If a VoIP user is conducting a conversation during congested periods, the voice packets will slow or drop resulting in missed syllables.

So, given the need for more users to share in the overall cost of the network itself and the additional latency of the connection itself, VoIP over best effort satellite networks will encounter performance problems.

QoS Networks

Think of a Best Effort plan (above) as a freeway with congested traffic where traffic stops and starts according to the number of cars trying to drive on the road at the same time. If the freeway had a priority lane (an HOV or high occupancy lane is an example in some cities) or an open lane that only some cars were entitled to travel on, these cars would travel faster without congestion because the lane is open. This is the benefit of a QoS Service Plan on a managed network. Time sensitive traffic can be prioritized to reach its destination sooner and without starts and stops. However, this comes with an added cost.

For end users needing VoIP over satellite Internet to work consistently well a QoS managed network that specifically prioritizes voice packets is required.

Minimum Connection Speed

The codec used by the VoIP provider is the key determining factor on connection speed for VoIP to work consistently well. Most big name VoIP providers that sell primarily to terrestrial cable and DSL customers are designed to work without the latency of satellite. These services don?t work well on satellite and tend to use codec that need a higher minimum bandwidth. Satellite service providers use codecs that require 30 kbps or less to function well. It is important that the end user works with their satellite service provider to insure the VoIP router or ATA device is configured with the correct codec for satellite.

The Importance of a Properly Installed Antenna on Performance

Most people today are familiar with satellite TV which is a one-way service, meaning a satellite TV dish picks up radio signals from 23,000 miles out in space. Satellite Internet not only picks up signals, but it also sends radio signals back to the satellite 23,000 miles out in space! This two-way communication requires a very precise antenna properly mounted so it can hit a receiving dish 20 feet wide on the satellite. Any ?misses? result in lost transmissions so they must be sent again, slowing the speeds. If the user is transmitting a voice packet, these misses result in a lost syllable or two. Data packets lost are rarely discernable but VoIP packets lost can be heard. Using weather proven antennas, well engineered mounting systems, and a professional installation will result in a dish that can consistently send an accurate signal to hit the satellite every time.

911 Calling

911 Service for VoIP providers requires special attention since in many cases, there is no land based telephone line attached to a physical address that emergency responders can go to. It is important to consider the ramifications of this before deciding on VoIP, and with the added mobility of satellite, it becomes more of an issue. Most VoIP service providers have specific 911 Service solutions that may include a call center equipped with a database of last known location but the end user is responsible to keep this updated.

Summary

Voice over IP over Satellite Internet works but the degree that the end user is generally satisfied with the service will depend entirely upon the quality of the satellite service and the connection itself. QoS networks will work best and offer consistent quality. Low end consumer service plans will not, as a rule, perform adequately. That said, the expectations of Voice over IP over Satellite need to be thoroughly discussed with professionals in advance of the buying decision to avoid disappointment as described in the story of the Alberta geologist.

David Bloomfield: Increasing the Graduation Rate Quickly, Cheaply and For Real

The New York State Education Department is thinking about replacing the General Education Diploma test because of its cost, up to $6 million per year, and its 60 percent pass rate, the lowest in the country, the Wall Street Journal reported. One alternative, according to the Journal, might be a computer-based exam of practical skills such as "measuring a room for carpeting, writing a letter to Congress and calculating credit card interest payments."

For high-school aged students especially, such an exam would be a poor substitute for the GED since, obviously, there is more to a high school education than basic skills requiring little more than eighth-grade math and grammar. The effect would be just another way to improperly inflate the number of high school degrees granted, in the same manner that Regents exams have been dumbed down and "credit recovery" programs substitute make-work for actual subject mastery, leaving the impression of college and career readiness without the substance.

But a relatively quick, cheap, and instructionally legitimate change to state law could raise graduation rates without lowering standards.

Currently, New York State Commissioner's Regulation ? 175.5(a)(3), and similar mandates around the country, requires all students in grades 7-12 to have five and a half hours of instruction per day. This requirement makes sense for most students and forces districts to provide minimally adequate class time.

GED-eligible students, though, are older and often need to work. The daily instructional requirement actually encourages their dropping out rather than encouraging completion of necessary credits up to age 21, their legal right. These students -- 18 or over, in the military, or out of prison -- should be able to enroll in regular high school courses that they missed or failed the first time without having to remain in school all day. Changing the requirement for these students, at their option, could make all the difference in their graduating from a regular high school with a regular degree.

This is neither a shortcut nor a lowering of standards. Allowing overage, under-credited students the opportunity to meet graduation requirements through part-time attendance is simply a recognition that their life circumstances and, often, demonstrated aversion to full-time instruction make them different from other teenagers. Theirs would be an understandable exception to the usual rule and could be narrowly tailored, preventing younger students from receiving truncated schedules. Further, it would provide a cost-effective method of increasing meaningful graduation rates without substituting computerized "life skills" tests of dubious worth.

Well, I am not too sure about that since in cloud living, there are two paths we can take. One is mini sites and another is blogging. He explains both in detail in his cloud living ebook.

Strange!!! Cloud blogging should have been a subset of cloud living. However, it is not!!!

But, you?shouldn?t?complain anymore because he?s offering an awesome free resource: Blogging Case Study?which is completely free and the content is simply awesome. I would definitely pay for this one.

Case Study #3: Gideon Shalwick From becomeablogger.com and rapidvideoblogging.com

Gideon is an expert in video. I love his videos and it?s highly informative. One of the products that made me the most money as an affiliate is his becomeablogger course.

Becomeablogger.com is run jointly by Gideon and Yaro Starak from Entrepreneurs-Journey.com. It?s obviously a course that teaches people about blogging. The main selling point here is that they use a lot of videos in this course.

Rapidvideoblogging.com is run by Gideon alone and focuses on video blogging. Agreed this is a bit different, but it somehow overlaps with the becomeablogger course in my mind.

If that?s not enough, he has a host of other products that you can buy for 247$. Here?s the page on his site.

As I said, I do not have any issues with any of the above mentioned bloggers. They provide real value and the products they have are worth every penny.

My Argument Against This Approach

My problem, however, is that people who are new to this stuff ?think? that what they purchase the first time is all they need to be successful. Then they are greeted with course after course. There seems no end to this.

I even sometimes think Darren might come up with several ebooks titled ?ProBlogger?s Guide to Your Second Week of Blogging?, ?ProBlogger?s Guide to Your Third Week of Blogging?, and so on. I?m sure if? that happens, content might be exclusive. Not the same re-hashed stuff.

However, how about thinking from a buyer?s perspective?

We buy a product thinking that it?s a solution to all our problems, only to find that there is another product from the same person who we bought the earlier course from. This time, the sales pitch makes it seem to us that ?this is the one?. What happens when we buy it too? After some time, another product launches claiming to be the ultimate guide or whatever. So which is it that is ?the one??

I choose these three bloggers for case study because I know their products offer value. But, there are a few others who re hash the same content and sell as different courses. If I choose to write about them, I think it might be a non constructive post.

My Argument For This Approach

From a sellers perspective, this is absolutely fair. In some ways, yes, it?s the only way you should proceed with product creation.

If you overwhelm a reader with too much information via one resource, chances of them taking any action is close to zero. Now, if you are like most honest product creators, you want your users to benefit from what you offered them. So, why should he not want them to make the most out of it?

By splitting the topic into a number of resources, you can, in effect lower the price of each resource and make it more targeted.

Take for example the blogging book for business and the normal blogging book from Darren. Don?t you think that businesses can benefit from reading the book with a focus on business? They could possibly save money and a lot of time.

The reason I picked out 3 bloggers is because I respect these guys a lot. I know they deliver what they promise. But how do users feel when they are confronted with ?similar sounding? offers again and again??Do you think it?s fair to the readers? Is this a business model that you would like to follow?
